Janice L. Lucas is Executive Director the newly founded LEAD Coalition of Bay County, a collaborative group established to reduce violent crime in the community. Under her leadership, the organization has completed a Strategic Plan, garnered a $325,416 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, hosted three Bay County Youth Summits, and established LEAD as a 501(c)3 organization with a 23-member Board of Directors. This position of Executive Director allows Lucas to use her vast skill set from teaching (6th grade through college), communications (newspaper reporting and broadcast production), consulting, and community service.

Upon completing her Bachelor’s Degree in broadcast journalism at Florida A&M University, she was one of 16 minority journalism graduates selected nationwide to be a CAPITAL CITIES COMMUNICATIONS TRAINEE. During the one-year training program Ms. Lucas interned at The Times in Kansas City, Missouri, The Daily Register in Shrewsburry, New Jersey, and The Star Telegram in Fort Worth, Texas, June-October 1983. At the end of the year, she returned home to Panama City and joined the staff of The News Herald, where her reporting assignments included education, health and the city of Lynn Haven City. She also wrote news, analysis and feature stories.

Ms. Lucas holds also holds a Master’s Degree in English Education from the Florida State University Panama City Campus. During 1995-1996, she was the Visiting Assistant Professor at The Kettering Foundation in Dayton, Ohio. Ms. Lucas has presented papers and led workshops at national and regional conferences.
